Relative to the Wildlife Crossing at Liberty Canyon.

SCR 62, as introduced, Stern. Wildlife Crossing at Liberty Canyon.
This measure would designate an overpass that will be constructed over State Route 101 in the County of Los Angeles west of the Liberty Canyon freeway exit as the Wildlife Crossing at Liberty Canyon. The measure would request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost for appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.

WHEREAS, California is home to a rich array of wildlife and landscapes; and
WHEREAS, Biodiversity and habitat connectivity play a vital role in California’s economy and in ensuring a sustainable future for current and future generations of Californians; and
WHEREAS, Habitat loss and fragmentation are major contributors to declines in populations of native fish, marine life, and terrestrial wildlife; and
WHEREAS, Wildlife crossings save money and lives, both human and animal; and
WHEREAS, Wildlife corridors serve to connect wildlife habitat areas and allow for the movement, migration, and dispersal of fish, wildlife, and plant species; and
WHEREAS, In addition to other benefits, wildlife corridors provide ecosystem services such as pollination, air and water purification, and carbon sequestration and disturbance prevention; and
WHEREAS, Wildlife corridors increase public safety and are highly effective at reducing vehicle-wildlife collisions and the costs associated with those collisions; and
WHEREAS, Formally designating and protecting wildlife corridors is a crucial strategy for bolstering California’s ecosystem resiliency and for ensuring the long-term viability of wildlife population and communities; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates an overpass that will be constructed running north to south across State Route 101 in the County of Los Angeles on the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority property located west of the Liberty Canyon freeway exit, as the Wildlife Crossing at Liberty Canyon to recognize California’s commitment to wildlife preservation and protection; and be it further
Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of appropriate signs, consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system, showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover the cost, to erect those signs; and be it further
Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
